Even if nobody in Detroit knew enough rudimentary Spanish to notice the coincidence, the Nova could not have been brought to market in Mexico and/or South America without the involvement of numerous Spanish speakers engaged to translate user manuals, prepare advertising and promotional materials, communicate with the network of Chevrolet dealers in the target countries, etc.

Why You Remember Them: Previous installments of this award-winning series have included bands with numerous hits, if not multiple albums, to their names, but we bring that streak to a screeching, flaming halt with Steelheart, whose sole contribution to the poufy-hair zeitgeist is “I’ll Never Let You Go,” a song whose fierce, animalistic coda explodes with such visceral fury that it is entirely likely that lead singer Michael Matijevic, a man with a consonant-y name so clunky and Eastern European-sounding that I’m sure we’re related, exploded his carotid artery straining for the last note and is still lying in a pool of blood and Aqua Net in a studio somewhere. There are also three standout lead dancers in bright red pointe shoes and anklet socks: Jeanette Delgado, German, and current ABT principal Cassandra Trenary. In this production the honors were done by willowy Kaitlyn Gilliland, formerly of NYCB, and Stephanie Petersen, formerly of ABT. The nine sections bring different groups on and off - five dancers, 10 dancers, six dancers (there are a total of 13).įirst up are what Tharp calls the head “stompers” - female dancers in white sneakers. In “Upper Room,” the curtain rises on a stage filled with fog, through which dancers suddenly appear - “out of nowhere,” Tharp has said. Several dancers were on the retirement path one, Jada German, recently graduated from Juilliard. It’s a collection of veterans and some in earlier stages of their careers. 23 at City Center, Tharp has paired “In the Upper Room” with another well-known and very different work, her 1982 “Nine Sinatra Songs.”Īnd she has brought together an excellent ensemble of 17 dancers from a variety of companies, including New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey, plus former dancers from Miami City Ballet and San Francisco Ballet among others. Tharp’s masterpiece is a work that virtually nobody tires of seeing again and again - and almost an addiction for some dance fans (guilty as charged).įor this current iteration, which lasts through Oct. But there is, always, an undercurrent of joy and exhilaration. There is no doubt that Tharp’s fiendishly difficult choreography, set to the propulsive music of Philip Glass, is a test of endurance that only the best dancers can even contemplate tackling. What are they thinking? It seems the dancers - and there have been many, from different companies, over 36 years - are delighted both with performing the work, and having survived it. That they manage to find enough breath is almost miraculous - and explains their wide grins at curtain calls. Audience members literally gasp, but one imagines the dancers do so even more, in the wings, in the (very) brief breaks between entries and exits. If the adoration seemed intense, take note that this crowd had just watched her dancers perform “In the Upper Room,” Tharp’s breathtaking 1986 classic that sends dancers to the outer reaches of their capabilities.īreathtaking is an apt description in more ways than one. Just before the lights went down for the second act of Twyla Tharp’s new program Wednesday night, some in the crowd spotted the 81-year-old choreographer sneaking into her seat, small and lithe, with a bob of gray hair - and unmistakable to dance fans. While many places in America are dealing with unfortunate and inhospitable economic climates, Ascension Parish is fortunate to be enjoying a wave of increase. Boards, Commissions, Committees, & Elected Officials.Geographic Information System (GIS Division). I haven't found any other tool that works as well for that. It took me many years to develop a cataloguing system that would enable me to locate any of my photos in 1 or 2 steps. But Lightroom's cataloguing and keywording features are what makes it indispensable. Lightroom's interoperability with Photoshop and all these others makes is a good starting point and hub. Each has a few features I like, but not enough to make me switch (or constantly upgrade to the latest version). (Not that I've found, anyway.) I also have CaptureOne, On1, Luminar, Topaz, and probably some others around here. And for architecture and other photos that require perspective correction and other distortion correction, there is nothing else out there that can do the job like DxO. There are some film and camera emulations in DxO that I like. I used DxO for a long time as a plugin for Lightroom, but not so much any more. I switched to Lightroom 3 or 4 somewhere around 2012 or 13. That being said I'm not entirely ruling out PhotoLabs and I might go back to it, because I really want it to work, as it's still a nice software and it makes more sense money-wise.Īctually, I had DxO PhotoLab first. After editing a few photo sessions on PhotoLabs, I just found the results more pleasing in LR. On PhotoLabs I found it way less "subtle", I couldn't really pull the slider just a little. On LR I can pull down my blacks and shadows just a tiny bit. On LR I straighten my horizon, double click, then done.īut what struck me the most is that I find LR more "subtle". Then go back to the basic corrections tab. I have to straighten my pictures, then go to the cropping panel, then click to another cropping tab, then crop. DXO's straightening features are really good, I like them better than the LR ones, but. I like seascapes but I just can't get my horizon straight. Like: I do a lot of straightening on my pictures. It's a bit hard to explain, but I'd say it just works faster on LR.Īnother thing that struck me is the fact that for some tasks, you have to do way more manipulations in PhotoLabs. setting stars to the pictures I want to keep with keyboard shortcuts, and then, when exporting, attributing them a color before putting them in a given folder, is way faster than what I had to do with PhotoLabs. That being said, I do enjoy LR way more than PhotoLabs. Something that actually might me switch to it. I was really impressed with the denoising features of PureRaw / PhotoLabs. And forced myself to shoot RAW to enjoy most of those features. Just following up to everybody who replied to my post. So, if you switched from Lightroom to PhotoLabs, do you regret it, do you miss something from LR or are you happy with your choice? Thanks! PhotoLabs lets you do most of that, that's why I'm contemplating using it instead of Lightroom. Like import all the pictures from a photo session, rate the one that I want to keep, edit them, and then tag them with different colors to export them on different folders. I'am aware there's other Lightroom alternatives but I use a lot of the "cataloging" features when I editing my pictures. I do all of that on Lightroom, export my pictures and back them up out of my computer, so, to me, Lightroom is an editing software more than a place where I keep all of my pictures. It's mostly pulling down the highlights on overexposed photos, and I like deep shadows and blacks. Those features (and PS) are definitely cool to have, but I don't use them enough to justify the price of the subscription.Ī few words on my workflow, as context: I'm a JPEG shooter and do some minor editing on my pictures. Also, the Photography Plan lets you use Photoshop which I use from time to time, like to remove a spot with the clone stamp tool. I realize that, generally speaking, there's more features on Lightroom, like the slideshow windows, etc. Also, Lightroom has more cataloging features, like more colors to tag your pictures. For instance, I use the "white" slider a lot on LR and can't seem to find it on DXO. I have been using DXO PhotoLabs for a few days and I realize Lightroom has way more features. I'd like to know if some of you went that route, and if yes, if you miss something from Lightroom. I'm happy with it but Adobe's photography plan is starting to be a little expensive, and I'd rather buy a software once and for all than pay a monthly subscription. I'd like to see if this software can replace Lightroom, which I currently use to edit my pictures.
